I’m at the cash register when a “customer” walks up to me and asks me a stupid question about a paint can he brought with him. “Does this wood paint work for all types of wood or.. and is it on clearance because it was on the clearance wall but there is no price on it”.
Out of my peripheral i see a short man zoom from behind me and to my side with a jingling bag and quickly hikes up the escalator.
Frick.
Thieves work in groups, one usually distracts an associate while the other does the dirty work. But there is still the guy in front of me! And he is just standing there keeping his cool.
“Let me go check the price of that wood paint at the clearance sheet at our other register” (the one that doesn’t exist).
Now I’m at the other register too far to hear, I pickup the phone and call security.
“Hey it’s mark at tools do you see the guy at the tools register with the fedora? Yeah, he just distracted me while some other shorter person with glasses on bolted past me with stolen merch”
“F**K, We’d been watching him for a while but we didnt thi-”
He hangs up. I go back to the thief.
“I can give you that paint can for 5.99 actually, pretty good deal”
“Nah I’m all set”
He walks away.
Loser.
Apparently security cant detain him because obviously he wasnt the other stealing the stuff. Police were already there however because there is a police outpost in the mall and Sears asked them for help. But it didnt matter, you cannot detain someone without hard evidence.
He was going to get away until a cop realized he was DUI (how did i not catch that?)
